Also known as Control-L or LAN-C, LANC is a protocol invented by Sony Corporation, used to synchronize camcorders and cameras. It allows the user to remotely control most functions of a recording device, such as Power On and Off, Record Start and Stop, Zoom In and Out, etc.

Anyone who needs to control a video recorder or camera, but doesn’t have physical access to the buttons on the unit, or cannot use a wireless remote controller because they don’t have line-of-sight. It is ideal for Helmet Camera applications and other scenarios where the DVR is hidden / protected away from arm's reach.

Not all manufacturers offer LANC on their recorders. It is a feature available on many Sony and Canon recorders, and most recently found on some dedicated solid-state DVR’s meant for use under harsh conditions, such as Bullet DVR, Chasecam, STACK and a few others. There are also numerous digital still cameras which support the LANC protocol (called ACC).
